Owen Lovejoy

Owen Lovejoy, minister, abolitionist, U.S. congressman, and humanitarian, lived here from 1838 until his death in 1864. The house was a stop on the Underground Railroad, where Lovejoy harbored fugitive slaves on their way north to Canada and freedom. Elected to Congress in 1856, Lovejoy gained a national reputation through his congressional and party leadership and his fiery antislavery speeches. The house is operated as a museum.
